
Senior Sergeant Dermot Avon APM most recently served at Prahran Police Station. Growing up on a country police station, he developed an early connection to policing before joining Victoria Police in 1980. Throughout his career, he has worked across general duties, criminal investigation, security intelligence, major events including the Commonwealth Games and Formula 1 Grand Prix, as well as various corporate roles.
Dermot has been a member of The Police Association Victoria Board for 20 years. He first served as a delegate and has since held the positions of Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, Junior Vice President and Senior Vice President before being elected by the TPAV Board to serve as the 50th President in TPAV’s 108-year history on Monday 20th November 2025.
He has also served as Vice President of the Victoria Police Cycling Club for 30 years. A survivor of both the Hoddle Street and Queen Street massacres, Dermot has dedicated much of his career to peer support, assisting members in Victoria as well as providing support in Queensland and New Zealand.
In recognition of his significant contribution to policing, he was awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2023. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Professional Honours and a Master of Business Management.
